Because the Sierra present a time-bottleneck, the herd tends to run pretty
strong out of Campo. Distances and, above all, water often dictate where
people will be. Even as a solo hiker, I did not spend a night alone until
Eagles Roost, mile 390. That being said, I spent only two other nights on the
entire Trail with other hikers - that being at Messenger Flats Campground (mile
430) and atthe William Cabin Flat on the first day out of the Heitmans of
Belden Town ( mile 1295.5) . Not counting contacts with civilization, like
Hiker Heaven, Kennedy Meadows, VVR, etc.

After a little while, crowding never seemed serious again. If there's one
thing you can say about the experiences of thruhikers, it's how different they
are.
