[pct-l] North to South

I guess as a flip-flopper I have a distinctive perspective to bring to this
question. I hiked 650 continuous miles NoBo before turning around and
hiking over a thousand miles SoBo. While traveling Nobo on california I
thought that crowding was serious issue. Your perspective on this will
depend on your own style. The guidebook is infinitely easier to figure out
going north. Also, the trail community expect hikers at certain times and
they will be prepared for your arrival. And, of course, climate and
seasonal factors make NoBo hiking the best option for most hikers on a
normal year.
As a sobo your start date will be critical. I was able to start from
Manning on June 20 and had it really easy as far as snow travel. Last year
was highly exceptional though. Based on what the locals told me and my own
experience living in Oregon for 22 years you couldn't expect to find the
same conditions that I saw in june until mid July or later. If you choose
to go SoBo be prepared to hike over a LOT of snow and possibly get rained on
seemingly all the time. That said, I loved hiking sobo. The smaller number
of hikers meant that we had a really close knit moving community. I knew
almost every sobo hiker out there, that was certainly not the case in SoCal.
I hope all this helps
Peace and Love,
Matt
