This may not  be entirely the case.  Extensive research done  here in the 
Sierra foothills shows the Miwok spent no more than 4-5 hours per  day in meeting 
all of their needs.  This leaves a lot of time for  something....... more 
than just scratching and spitting... more than  Hobbes  "solitary, poor, nasty, 
brutish, and short."
