Yes, it is possible to have topo maps in a Garmin GPS for the PCT. I've
already loaded the complete trail with Garmin Topo USA (based on 1:100 000
maps, normally with a 40 meter contour interval) into my GPSmap 60C
receiver. I've examined all of Section A and some of Section B in detail,
and so far I've found that the PCT isn't depicted on the topo map, but I
still think it will be a useful supplement to paper maps and compass. I
will be experimenting with how much more topo mapping I can load from the
Garmin National Parks West software package, which is based on
1:24 000 data, and much more detailed. It only covers National Parks and
their immediate vicinity. I've enjoyed using that much better mapping
coverage in my backyard playground in Whatcom County -- the region in and
around the North Cascades National Park. The GPSmap 60C has a capacity for
52 megabytes of supplemental mapping information.
Has anybody recorded geocoordinates for the places mentioned in Benedict
Go's Pacific Crest Trail Data Book? There's no point in re-inventing the
wheel if that work has already been done.
Thanks,
