We've hosted a beautiful Israeli travel show host who was getting paid for her videolog of the trail. A reporter for the Oregonian, hiked while on special assignment, doing a series on the PCT for the newspaper. There have also been a few hikers sponsored by outfitters; they weren't getting paid, but some of their costs were covered.
So, it can be done to some degree!

There must be a way. Met a hiker who was getting 18 college credits from
Evergreen State ( WA ) for hiking the PCT.
