Understandable.   I do feel that the AT seems to invite unsavory individuals
to a degree that other trails don't.  However, the preface to my first AT
Log ends with a heartfelt comment thanking "the many individuals from
Georgia to Maine who, by our brief encounter, helped open my eyes to the
great kindness lurking out there."  

What is it the Arabs say?  Trust in God, but tie your camel?  Perhaps a
cautious mindset is not inappropriate...
