To many experienced
hikers, the PCT has the appearance of a superhighway!  Is this really
wilderness, considering the volume of traffic?

Is there the chance your major experience on the PCT is in the Sierra only? Most of the PCT is truly wilderness, maybe NOT with a capital W, but none-the-less, wild country. Most of the PCT is vastly removed from humans and with the possible exception of when thru hikers are on the move, receives the most minimal of human traffic.
