One of the most useful knots for pitching a tarp or tent is the tautline
hitch. It is a knot that slides easily when the knot is loose but stays
tight when under tension. This lets you adjust the tension on a guy line
without moving the stake. It works the same as those fancy plastic
tighteners but saves you a couple grams. I'm always surprised by the number
of campers who don't use it.
