[pct-l] Bird Springs Cache needs help

Maybe the PCT 2006 group should simply plan to deal with the 28 mile
waterless section. Let's see that should be 7-8 liters of water.
Personally, I would prefer to see BLM focus on efforts address trail issues
rather than address problems with access roads, but I would be happy to send
along a note to BLM.

I appreciate the advanced warning, but this was a section I had already
planned to pack a large supply of water on my thru-hike next year.

Subject: [pct-l] Bird Springs Cache needs help

The roads are washed out and the cache will not be stocked next year.

Mary Barcik, 70, who has stocked the cache for six years, asks hikers(and
others) write to:

The Bureau of Land Management
300 South Richmond Road
Ridgecrest, CA 93555

And request they fix the roads to Bird Springs Pass and the PCT.

Bird Springs Cache is a VERY important cache. (Breaks up a 28 mile waterless
stretch) If they fix the road, Mary will keep us supplied next year.

Mary's son is going to 4-wheel up 15 gallons on the 14th. That will be the
last of it.

She will still maintain Kelso Valley Road. There is presently 30 gallons
there.

LETTER:

The Bureau of Land Management
300 South Richmond Road
Ridgecrest, CA 93555

Dear Sirs

Every year hundreds of hikers attempt to hike from Mexico to Canada on the
Pacific Crest Trail. They depend on the help of hundreds of people off the
trail. One of the greatest helps in Southern California are those who put
water out on the trail for the hikers.

One of the most if not THE most crucial spots on the trail is near Weldon,
CA where the Pacific Crest Trail comes to Bird Springs Pass. Up until the
present, the water here has been supplied by an incredible seventy-year-old
volunteer named Mary Barcik.

Mary claims the roads have been washed out and she will not be able to help
the hikers any longer without the roads. She says the Bureau of Land
Management maintains (can fix) the roads.

If the BLM fixes the roads, Mary will continue to supply the hikers with
water.

Thank you for your help.

Sincerely

Or I can email you a letter to send----just ask
