[pct-l] What to do with cats?

We are currently in the same boat trying to figure out what to do with our two dogs and our cat during our thru hike next year. Ideally, someone reliable would come live in the house and take care of them so that they can at least be at home in our absence. So far, we have been asking friends. I would rather have someone we know and trust as opposed to a total stranger. I think my mind would be more at ease while hiking. Besides, most of our good friends have spent so much time around the animals that they know at least a bit about each of their personalitles and what makes them tick (the dogs are both rescues and one is still particularly afraid of strangers). While we haven't found someone yet, a few seem interested. Then there is the issue of how to compensate them - do we may the whole mortgage payment ourselves and let them live there for free in return or do we charge a small amount of rent? We planned to pay ahead on our utilities and everything else is automatically
 withdrawn.

Logistics aside, I'm not sure how people do it. Even thinking about saying goodbye to the animals - especially the dogs - for that long makes me get all misty-eyed. It is going to be SO hard. I miss them dreadfully after only a few weeks away from home. I know that it will be hard on them too - especially our oldest pooch.

Dr. Bob had some really good advice tho. If all else fails, perhaps we will start inquiring at some of the shelters, kennels, and rescue groups. Besides, living in a cute little house a few blocks from the ocean isn't such a bad deal.
