Check out this website; http://www.thawookie.com/  This guy gave a talk and 
show at the recent ALDHA-West gathering and says that Oregon and Washington are 
essentially wide open and ready to hike, right now!  Washington requires a 
permit from one indian tribe and payment for a permit to another.  

The scenery, wildlife and adventure of this seems to definately rival that of 
the National Scenic Trails, IMHO.
