Ultralight gear does require a higher degree of discipline and care to
succeed where the vintage gear easily could survive any adventure where we
used them. Most vintage gear had lifetime guarantees also. In response to
helping the gear makers make a better product, what gear did you use? I have
found the P2, G4, and Squall excellent in my current adventures, but I also
treat them with great respect knowing each's inherent limitations and
weaknesses. Silnylon used in shelters and some packs is an incredible new
resource for ultralight gear, but it has great limitations and needs
constant vigilance and care to maintain and extend it's life....which will
be shorter than the vintage Kelty Packs, and North Face tents. We also carry
soda can stoves instead of MSR XGK stoves. There is a cost to enlightenment
on the trail, where lighter pack weight is the greatest benefit, and gear
lifespan is becoming a distant memory.

I recently purchased a
lightweight tarp-type tent and an ultralight pack.
After using the pack only once, for about 8 days, I
noticed that the bottom was full of holes. While
setting up my tent the rear pole shattered.
