[pct-l] Re: pct-l Digest, Vol 29, Issue 6

Tent, no. Jacket, YES! In 1998 I was hiking in the Sierras south of Red's Meadow. I met a hiker who was running down the trail, headed for the Ranger Station. He had spotted a hiker on the other side of the gorge that had a large S.O.S. and "Help" sign. He told me where the man was located, and I went to see what I could do. There was no way that I could cross the gorge/river to help, so I stayed where I was to see what developed. When the helicopter finaly arrived, they searched the immediate area for about 20 minutes. It was abvious that they could not see the man. I took out my bright yellow jacket and started waiving it around. They landed near me within 3 minutes, and I was able to point out the hiker on the other side. This hiker had nothing bright to help people find him, so they would have searched in vain for a LONG time. Now, I hike with at least one bright object, like my yellow rain jacket. The rest of my gear is a little more "environmentally" easy on the eyes.
