Remember when Sierra Designs tents used to be blue
and then a couple of years ago they switched to green?
Someone who worked at an outfitter told me that SD did
research on how tent color attracts bears. They found
that bears are more attracted to brightly colored tents
than to tents that blend in with the forest (all other
things being equal). I don't know this is actually
true, but that is what I was told.
If it is true, I suppose I'd be pretty much screwed in
my bright orange MSR Hubba.

bright? I have never heard of a rescue being done because someone was found
because their tent was of a bright color. I wish manufacturers made most
backpacking tents in subdued colors to blend into the environment. May be even
cammo designs. I might be wrong on this. I have been told all these bright
colors are for potential rescue action. I don't know if I buy that. It seems
it is for marketing their products.
I can see in high alpine environments having bright tents so you can find
your camp again after a summit attempt or in a storm. Also, bright colors
might be good if you are stuck in your tent in a storm. It makes it brighter
inside and more cheerful. But that is about it. Seems most of our camping
would be better off if we were stealth with our gear.
