 My recommendation is the Konica Minolta Dimage z5. Here's the specs:
 5 Megapixels
 12x optical zoom
 4 AA batteries
 11 oz.
 It's great for your purposes. I'm geting one for the reasons you listed 
(i.e. battery issues). But that zoom is a great plus for wildlife 
photography.
