The reason that bear boxes are unpopular with Park
Service employees is that they are used as dumpsters
by lazy, stupid hikers. Every box in Sequoia Park that
I used a few years ago had garbage in it. One even had
a whole box of Vienna Sausage. Now what are the
rangers supposed to do with that! 
Unfortunately, inconsiderate hikers have made the
decision for the rest of us that bear boxes will be
discontinued.
