My favorite hikes in Desolation are up from Fallen Leaf to Lake Aloha and the semi loop up from Eagle Lake going past Dicks, Fontanillas and the Velmas.  It is easier to get to Aloha and tends to be a bit busier.  The latter hike is my favorite for Desolation and I do it at least once a year.  Are you planning day hikes or backpacking?  Overnights require a permit from the USFS.
