My son Nathan Young just finished the section from Manning park to
Stehekin. In a brief phone conversation he said he used his ice axe
about 100 times to keep from falling on the ice that was under 5" of new
snow. He didn't bring crampons and had no complaints or requests for
more gear. Checking the NOAA Rainy Pass weather site shows mostly rain.

He also said most streams and rivers has bridges across them and were
not a problem.
Nathan is carrying a 22# pack and has extensive alpine experience and no
trekking poles.
