Rescuers renew effort to find missing hiker

LOST: New details might help in the search for the Virginia man last seen
near Idyllwild on May 3.

By KENNY KLEIN / The Press-Enterprise

Rescuers today plan to make another effort searching for a missing hiker
they say may be lost somewhere along the Pacific Crest Trail in the San
Jacinto wilderness.

Fellow hikers have not seen John Donovan, 60, of Virginia, since he was
spotted near Idyllwild on May 3, Riverside County sheriff's Sgt. Terry
Meadows said.

"Maybe he changed his path, we just don't know," Meadows said. "We are
still hoping to find him."

More than 15 Riverside Mountain Rescue Unit members plan to start
re-searching Saddle Junction, east of Idyllwild and from the Palm Springs
Aerial Tramway to Idyllwild, said rescue team spokeswoman Gwenda Yates.

Another search is planned Monday when a few RMRU members will hike about 16
miles from Snow Creek to Black Mountain, Yates said.

Yates said hikers who Donovan camped with provided new details that might
help searchers, such as the color of his backpack and that he wore tennis
shoes.

This may be important because there was snow and ice on the well-traveled
trail in the Idyllwild area May 2 and 3, Meadows said.

Donovan began hiking the Pacific Crest Trail on April 22 with hundreds of
other hikers on the California-Mexican border north of Baja, Mexico, said
Meadows. Donovan planned to meet cousins in Wrightwood.

He was expected to pick up supply packages at the Cabazon Post Office
several days after he was last seen, but never showed up. Donovan did pick
up supply packages at the Anza Post Office on May 2, Meadows said.

Donovan had traveled about 178 miles on the trail with a plan to hike 1,800
miles and finish in Oregon, Meadows said.

The Pacific Crest Trail spans 2,650 miles from Mexico to Canada and through
three Western states: California, Oregon and Washington.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Hemet Sheriff's Station at
(951) 791-3400.
