However you answer this question regarding ultra-lighters and
their margin of error I think there is a group of hikers that is
more at risk: day hikers.

Many day hikers are not prepared to spend a night out on the
trail if they get lost, injured, or slowed down by terrain and/or
weather.  Rain gear, warm clothing, and/or emergency shelter materials
would probably handle 99% of the problems encountered by day hikers that
hadn't planned to camp out.  In some situations, just carrying some
H20 might make the difference.
