According to CDC (Center for Disease Control) statistics there were 771
reported human cases of West Nile Virus in California in 2004, 3 in Oregon
and 0 in Washington State (Washington is the only state with no reported WNV
cases).  Mosquitoes are a known carrier of WNV, a type of encephalitis with
flu-like symptoms.  To me, this is a good incentive to use mosquito
repellent when hiking, especially in California.

I have been using 3M Ultrathon in combination with Permethrin clothing spray
for several years, ever since Consumer Reports rated Ultrathon the highest.
