[pct-l] Ice Axe in July?

Hiking from Campo to Tuolumne this summer - June 21st to August 5th.  I
plan to hit Kennedy Meadows around July 21st.

Will I need an ice axe if I'm starting the High Sierras in mid-July? 
If you need an ice axe, when do you know when to carry it and when you
can send it ahead in a drift box?
