See if there's an orienteering club in your area and attend as many events as 
you can in the time you have left. We went to our first one this weekend with 
our boys and it was really fun. The very first level is using the topo map 
only to find the "controls" or checkpoints, and you stay on-trail. Each level 
gets progressively more challenging and you get more off-trail and need to use 
your compass. I think it's exactly the practical kind of application most of us 
need after reading the books and learning the basics. It should build your 
confidence for your hike!
