I have always recommended Jippy Pop for trail popcorn, which we all love.
And it is healthy for you. But the Jippy Pop system is a little touchy to cook
and you have the trash/smell afterwards. Well, I have a new recommendation.
The good old JetBoil cooks popcorn just fine in about 2 minutes. Here is how
to do it.
1. Go to the health food store and buy organic popcorn in bulk. Put in a
container for the trail/backpack. May be something like a small bottle or zip
lock bags. The more air tight, the better.
2. Put in oil to just give the bottom a good covering. I recommend liquid
Crisco oil. Very plain, but excellent taste to popcorn. Use a small air tight
container for the oil.
3. Put in enough kernels to be about 2 kernels thick on the bottom.
4. Light and put on low heat for about 2 minutes.
5. Should just about fill up the JetBoil cup. Enough for one greedy
backpacker or for two from a nice sharing backpacker (which I do not recommend you be
in this case -- this popcorn we are talking about, no sharing stuff around
here).
Be careful, the JetBoil will pop it FAST. I recommend ButterBuds or Kernel
Season's white cheddar seasoning for popcorn. Or you could add some margarine
too. The JetBoil cup will still be hot after you empty the popcorn and will
melt some margarine for putting over it.
Very, very nice. Your trail buddy, Switchback
