[pct-l] RE: Thru-hiking PCT w/dog question

Jim,

I have been giving your post, and the many reactions to it, a great deal of thought. I appreciate that you have the courage to speak up about how you were treated, because many posters similarly treated just leave.

While I am certainly not a spokesperson for anyone or anything, I want to apologize to you for the rabid, unwarranted, and in some cases downright MEAN reponses that you received here on the post. You did nothing to deserve what you got back, and I for one am extremely disheartened by the inhospitable comments directed at you over your innocent, well-intended question. Unfortunately, you are not the first.

Now, the rest of this messages goes all list posters:

Not everyone who finds their way to the PCT-L is an experienced hiker, and none of us knows everything there is to know. While some of us enjoy the post to keep us connected to the hiking community, many people come to the post to learn, ask questions, and get prepared. These people believe that they are asking experts willing to answer their questions and help them. Well, some of you have proven to me and to this poor gentleman that that is far from the case. I am embarrassed and disgusted by how this guy (and many others) have been treated when asking for help.

I am thankful that hikers don't behave out on the Trail the way some of you do on this post -- we simply wouldn't be hosting hikers if that were the case. If you don't have the patience to respond to a question -- DON'T ANSWER IT. It's better than being mean or rude. If you are not interested in a particular thread -- DELETE IT!!! If someone is asking Hiking 101 questions, send them to the archives and to the PCTA website to get grounded in the basics, or simply help them by answering their questions. You could be saving their life with the knowledge you impart! REMEMBER, YOU TOO, AT SOME POINT, WERE ONCE A NOVICE WHO DIDN'T KNOW DIDDLY.

So, lighten up and be nice, or just say nothing. Is that so hard? Geez.

I asked the question ?thru-hiking with dog? question almost a week ago.

I?d like to preface what I?m about to say by telling you that I am relatively new to the internet, my nephew Scott (age 11) set my up just a few months ago and I am also brand new to hiking.

First, I would like to thank Jean Campbell, Donna Saufley, and all the many others who took time post and send emails helping me out.

Second, I want yogi and all of his disciples to know that I will NOT be hiking on their trail with my dog. I did not mean to offend anyone and did not mean for it to be a ?stupid question?. Although the number of folks with information far out weighted the threatening ones, I do not what my hike sabotaged, be ?fined?, have ?rangers waiting for me,? ?reported to PETA?, or anything else that what separate me from my dog.

I again sincerely apologize,

Big Jim
