Take a look at the Repeater Guide to the Pacific Crest Trail at
http://www.qsl.net/aa6j/pct/ . Near the bottom is a link to an extended
email conversation I had with a thruhiker thinking about bringing a ham
radio on the hike. 

Note that ham radios do require licenses, although with just a little bit of
studying it is not hard to pass the test, and you do not have to learn Morse
Code to use some radio frequencies.

As for a suggestion to use the USFS system, this is a very bad idea unless
you are literally dying. There are large penalties for using an unauthorized
frequency.
