[pct-l] Free ice axe lessons

For anyone interested, I will be on the trail for 3
weeks starting May 3 at Campo. I am not going into
the Sierra as I am just section-hiking Southern
California. I have no goals so will go as far as I
feel. If anyone wants lessons on ice axe basics, I
would be happy to show you if your trip intersects
with mine. My background: hiked the PCT Mexico -
Canada 1975 through the snowy Sierra (and climbed the
cornice at Forester Pass); mountaineer, rock and ice
climber of 30+ years experience (haven't been killed
yet though there were a few close ones...) and have
taught technical ice climbing and glacier travel.
Most of you will be ahead of me so I can't help you
for Fuller Ridge. Maybe Greg or someone will quickly
organize a basic ice axe class at ADZPCTKO. Although
an on-snow lesson is great, it is not totally
necessary to understand how to use the thing. I will
add that I will probably not be carrying an ice axe on
my hike. And although the lesson is free, beer
donations will be appreciated!

Q: What historic event involved an ice axe?

A: August 20th, 1940 Russian revolutionary Leon
Trotsky was attacked with an ice-axe in his office in
Mexico City by one of Stalin's followers, and the
following day died. They used that idea on the TV
show CSI a couple of years ago, too. I have no plans
to demonstrate the technique involved...
