I disagree about sending an ax to Idylwild. Before you reach Devils
Slide northbound, there are just a couple of really high pucker factor
patches. Between the Apache Springs trail junction and Red Tahquitz
peak, perhaps six to eight miles before Saddle Junction, the trail is,
in places, a ledge blasted out of the cliff face. There are a few
north-facing ice chutes that were really, really scary, with a
no-hope-for-the-wicked payoff in an eyeblink for just one mis-step.
That was in 2002, May/June, and an average to light snow year. If you
want to send it to Idylwild, consider hitching ahead from the Highway
74 Pines to Palms highway crossing to get it. Or carry it from Warner
Springs.
