Or when my kid hiked in 1979, they thought they could use if for a weapon if
the illegal's chased them. Now they laugh about there thinking in l979.

Old school answer. In 1977 we started at the Mexican border with our ice
axes. Weight was never a concern back then. The ice axe served a dual
purpose
- we could use it to prop up our heavy Kelty frame packs when we took one
of
our frequent breaks.
