YMMV. However, I considered a thruhike in 1978. The guys I was going to hike
with got as far as San Jacinto when one of them slipped on the ice and broke
his arm. Tilt, Game Over.

Personally having been along that section of the PCT in a heavy snow year, 
I think that an ice axe for Fuller Ridge would be a good idea this year.
