[pct-l] % of April 1 snow depths/water...

http://cdec.water.ca.gov/cgi-progs/reports/PAGE6.html

The stations below are closest to or on the PCT (memory may be faulty!)
They are taken from the above website. The numbers that are the most
interesting, that may spur the nobo/sobo discussion again - I miss
everyone waxing large with opinions - are those that are today's
readings, and the numbers for percentage of April 1 readings. I don't
see anything that would preclude calm certitude, with openness to
weather vagaries and quick change of plans, that this year is relatively
"normal" and and a nobo hike is still highly likely.

Tyndall Creek and Crabtree meadows are 20% above normal, but hey, what's
that mean at this point??? I'd be more concerned about cruising for
mile after mile into humbug summit where there is 144% of normal April 1
average. See the chart below for Tyndall Creek's list of snow water
averages over the last 20 years. Greg Hummel is working updating a
number of these graphs.

I'm a section hiker, but I've met a couple year's nobos and one year
(1991) at Sierra City I remember the haunted look in one woman's eyes
when she asked about snow heading towards Belden. Her heart was
deadened by snow. We hadn't run into any snow north of Sierra City in
1991. Her soul poured out of her body with thanks for the news. This
was June 27 or so.

Needless to say, we ran into snow up along the ridge above the Lakes
BAsin down to Donner Summit. It was tiring and hot - 75 degrees or
more, and kicking steps in steep snow hills only 15' long on the trail.
You go around them, but most times, it's easier to go over. No rhythm,
just hard, hard work.
