For the last year I've had a banded king snake living in the front yard that
I now refer to as "Bandy." The first time I saw it I was working on a
sprinkler when its head popped up in a hole right next to the sprinkler. I
jumped quickly and it just moved away from me slowly down the hill.

I'll know spring arrives when our family of about 30 quail joins Bandy in
the front yard.

 I think the reason we're not plagued with rattlers here at our place is
that King snakes are a natural enemy of the rattlers and will and eat them.
We have a Road Runner that patrols daily, and they also hunt for them.
