I used one of these on my 2004 PCT through-hike. It worked okay with a few
cavaets.
It is not waterproof at all. Even three minutes of light rain will soak
through. It is a good windbreaker however, and has a hood that so can seal
in the head and neck. And it weights very little.
For rain, I put an emergency plastic poncho over this jacket, which worked
fine for me. I had to be very careful not to rip it up, but the combination
worked very well. Some other people would not like the need to worry over
the fragility. I made the whole hike with just two emergency ponchos,
replacing the first one at White Pass (and remember in 2004 we were in rain
gear pretty much for a month straight).
Without some other form of water protection, the Red Lodge is a useless
jacket.
Steady Sr.
