Earl and Betty Davis, then in their late 60's, were finishing the AT and
told us this actual event that happened to them on the AT in Tennessee.
Earl came upon a local good-old-boy hunter who was resting in the trail and
Earl sat down to rest a minute.  As they talked, Betty, his wife, came up
and dropped her pack to sit also.  Earl said to him, "This is my wife,
Betty."  The local guy thought a minute and then said, "You ams lucky your
wife kin hike with you, 'cause
she kin help carry your stuff."

Thereafter, Betty delighted in explaining to everyone that she was just
there "to help carry his stuff."
