Well, as you can guess from my previous e-mail, the
better half does hike, but not nearly to the level of
me.
She is sweet, intelligent, attractive and somehow puts
up with me. :) She does not have any desire to go
hiking for 20 miles+ a day and/or for weeks at a time.
Her idea of a good trip is maybe 5-10 miles a day, or
better yet hike in 5-10 miles and explore an area via
basecamp.
It's OK. She understands that while I enjoy it, there
are times when I wnat to push myself solo. Part of me
wishes she was into these long excursions, OTOH I did
date a person who was into long distance hiking and
that did not work out. Partially because some of the
reasons that make us into LD hiking (independence,
desire for solitude, wanting personal challenges) can
sometimes make for less than great relationship. She's
a wonderful person (and I hope she can say the same of
me), but just did not work out.
My girlfriend and I had broken up for a while last
year; part of the reason was that she though the
outdoors is more lifestyle than hobby for me. She's
right. As with many things in life, we worked out a
compromise that should allow both of us to enjoy the
outdoors and each other. Part of me would love to be
with someone who shares the passion of the outdoors in
the same way I do, part of me also realizes there are
different ways to be passionate about the outdoors.
