[pct-l] Bear cannister idea

Okay, here's my brilliant idea. I'll put it out there and see what comes of it.

The idea is based on that of a pill capsule. Two buckets of similar length with diamaters as such that one slides inside the other. A coin-slot twist-locking mechanism (that's a really complicated term for a simple thing - reserving that idea for someone who can assist in manufacturing) would lock the inner cap in place against the outer cap. Assume the plastic is about 1/8" thick (fair for Nalgene - my bear vault is about that thick-walled) and an 1/8" gap between the inner and outer shells. Set the inner diameter at around 7"/7.5" (one would be larger) and the buckets about 6.5" deep. Assuming an inch of overlap, and a half-inch of curve at the corners (which loses full compression by about half an inch), two buckets at full extension would hold about 490ci, which could be compressed to about 290ci. Outer size would be 7.75" across the round and 7.25 to 12.25" long, depending on compression.

Design improvement ideas: reducing/eliminating the gap between shells, using rounded ends (which would allow thinner walls, since dome shapes have structural strength), different materials than Nalgene/Lexan, using a gasket to reduce/eliminate smells, etc.

I thought maybe threading the two halves so one screws onto the other would work, but a bear could figure out how to unscrew them. I have an idea for a simple locking mechanism that would make this thing work, although I'm sure someone out there is intelligent enough to come up with something like this. Or perhaps this idea has already been shot down. I don't know.

How do you mold lexan?
