Andiamo spandex non padded bicycle shorts... $20 at REI... get black...they  
show the dirt and other unspeakable stains less.  REI also has  Bodyglide...
 
I once had thigh rash so bad that I wound up tearing the inner seams out of  
the pants further and further until someone on the VVR boat asked me if I was  
wearing a kilt.  The above put an end to all problems.
