If you start from the south end the forest service will issue a permit
good for the entire JMT. I do think you will need to get a Mt. Whitney
area sticker - talk to Inyo forest service office about that:

If you start from Yosemite the park service wilderness office will
issue a permit for the entire JMT. Last I heard, you do not need a
Whitney area sticker if you start from the Yosemite end, but check
with Yosemite on that: http://www.nps.gov/yose/wilderness/permits.htm
