I've never, owned "official" trekking poles. Always
use thrift store ski poles. Used the same pole on the
Long Trail in 1999 and the PCT in 2002. That is over
3000 miles of hiking on a pair of $10 poles!
Yes, you can't collapse them..but, well, never found
that to be a huge problem.
As always, YMMV.
