[pct-l] Which book?
FWIW,
I purchase any book about the PCT that I can. Since my attempt in
2000, several great contributions have been added. IMHO, this is how I
would rank the current material if I was on a limited budget...
#1 The PCT Trail guide books from Wilderness Press.
#2 The PCT Data Book from Ben Go.
#3 The "Yogi's PCT Handbook".
#4 The PCT Town Guide from Leslie Croot.
The only essential is #1, but all four have great value. I cut up
the guide books and the data book for use on the trail. #3 and #4 turned
out to be great planning tools for me and were much more important than
other resources for accuracy. The new Videos that have recently come out
are great also. I like having them play as background while I pack supplies
or play around with version X of alcohol stoves.
When I cut the guide books up, I always include the base section map
along with the route section. I like reading the geo and bio material
intermixed in the text, and consider it a major enhancement for the trip.
If that's not for you, then the guide books might annoy you. If you have
the time you could extract the information you want, but I don't know of
this being done by anyone yet. Be a bit careful to plan when you will need
the material or you could send yourself stuff after you needed it.

Subject: [pct-l] Which book?
Greetings to all. I have been lurking on the list for a while, busy planning
to start the PCT in April. I think only one of my major questions has never
been addressed here--what information do the various guidebooks have and
what is 'essential' to bring?
I'm referring to the PCTA guidebooks, the data book, and Yogi's handbook (am
I missing any?). I have a good idea of what's in Yogi's book from the sample
pages. Can anyone describe what the others are like so I don't have to buy
them to find out? Any comparisons to the AT data book, Companion, and
Wingfoot?
I really only want my book to tell me about Water, Resupply, and not getting
Lost. Everything else detracts from the adventure.
Also looking for advice concerning maps.
Thanks, and see you in April,
Maurice Schwenkler
