As a Mescalero Apache Indian (1/8 on my father's side), I've been know
to coin more than a few words for cold-enough-to freeze-your-pecker-off
and ass-kicking climbs...
I think I came close to a hallucinogenic "seeing the spirits" state
while stumbling across The Borrego to Scissors Crossing in 115 degree
heat after an exhausting descent around Iron Mountain from Cuyamaca last
March... But the only phrase that came to mind was "When the F**k is
this trail gonna cross the highway!!!!"
I was supposed to start climbing into the San Felipes that afternoon,
but by the time I was guzzling water at Scissors and looking up those
switchbacks, I was done. Even if my mind was willing, my legs were
threatening to go out from under me in the worst possible location if I
tried...

If by Indian, you mean those people over in Asia, you're far from the
truth. If you mean those people that live in the southern states, you're
closer, but if you mean those people that live up in Alaska known as
Inuit's, you're probably about right as to the source of the word. Or so
I hear tell.

Katabatic!
Yes! That was it!
Never heard of such a term...but the area from Campo to Cibbetts is
Katabatic!
(I think it's an old Indian word meaning "It's cold enough to freeze
your loin-cloth-snake off")

Katabatic?

Somebody once described the condition something like, "inversion
zone"??? "conversion zone"???
Something about the way the topography creates a "cold sink", trapping
colder air while warmer air is close and all around...
