Clean them?  The only people I have heard complaining about the strap
not holding are people who has thousands of miles.  Most likely the
problem is accumulated oil and dirt. The one person I know in real
life (e.g. not just people on mailing lists)  didn't have troubles
until the very end of the AT.  After cleaning the stap (maybe with the
alcohol from his stove?... I not 100% sure I remember what he told me)
the slipping stopped.
