Well, the latest commercial gear fest issue of Backpacker Magazine has come out.  What a joke of commercialism.  See the "Ultra Light" section.  It is to laugh.  Look at the weights they call ultra light.  Look at the matrix of gear selections designed to cram as much new gear on to one page as possible.  The whole thing is a big ad for all the new 2005 gear from their advertisers.  The magazine is okay for an overview of new gear, but a lot of the old gear is better or just as good.  Where is grandma Gatewood when we need her?

I say we start another magazine the really represents the hiking/trekking/backpacking community.  Anyone got $10 million they want to invest?  While we are at it, if you have $40 million we can also start a new REI that really evaluates/publishes gear they sell like the old co-op they use to be.
