Please be nice to Donna. She's one of the most amazing
people you'll ever meet, on or off the trail. The PCT is very
lucky to have her in our corner.
And in case you aren't aware of what it means to "come
thru AD", well here ya go: Donna does your laundry and
smells your socks after they're clean, just to show how
clean they are. You get to drive the Saufley's cars to
anyplace you want to go. There's a phone and computer
just for the hikers. Movies and records. A place to hang
out. A place to sleep. A place to have a bar-b-que. A
kitchen to use. "Coming thru Agua Dulce" means you'll
be staying at the Saufley's place. Donna doesn't HAVE
to do this for us. She does it because she wants to.
And I agree with Donna's assessment of thru-hikers and
section-hikers. We see it on the trail, too. We can tell
the difference between thru-hikers and section-hikers.
It's in the questions each group asks, the gear each
group carries, the experiences each group draws on.
Thru-hikers have a certain "look". It's not just the dirty
clothes. It's something else. An "X-factor". It comes
from being emersed into trail life for 5 months. From
knowing that you've already hiked xxx miles and you
have xxxx miles to go. Thoughts of work and home are
not as close to the surface for thru-hikers as they are
for section-hikers. Section-hikers seem more connected
to the "other world" than thru-hikers are.
Neither group is better than the other. It's just that for
the most part, there are differences. It's not a bad thing.
Different groups are different. That's all.

Donna,
Remind me to not talk about what I "do" when I come thru AD next spring,
on my 1/3 PCT section. I'll just tell you now that I'm self employed in
several things. In what? Well, you'll just have to ask next spring.
