That's a poor man's patent, establishing the date of the invention  
which serves as prior art. This does not grant you a patent, but it  
prevents anybody else from patenting the same idea. As for copyright,  
everything you write is assumed to be copyrighted unless you expressly  
enter it into the public domain. Registering with the copyright office  
is not necessary, though I believe it offers additional protections.

By the way, this email is my copyrighted property and if you quote it  
in its entirety it will cost you $5 per copy.
