An altimeter watch is a good thing to carry along the
PCT. The Suunto Vector worked well for me too, who
believes that accuracy is more important than a few
grams more or less. The knowledge of one's elevation
is a useful navigation tool.
For me, the single most useful navigational tool was
developing a notion of my pace. After a few hundred
miles, I developed a reasonably accurate feel for my
walking speed, even as it varied due to climbs and
descents and trail conditions. Just by noting my
watch occasionally, I could predict my arrival, or
not, at the next expected rest or lunch spot.
Your mileage will vary.
