"Triple crown." Never mind what it takes to qualify. Just
consider the irony of the terminology for a moment. This
accolade has its origins in horse racing. But long distance
hiking is neither an equestrian event nor a race! What's
more, and I say this without malice, but the term was coined
by Jardine, I believe during his tenure with ALDHA-west.
Anyone who's read the PCT Hiker's Handbook knows how Ray
feels about the damage horses cause on the trails. And not
that the Appalachian Trail Conference preceded on this
particular view, but not for nothing horses are banned from
the AT, the trail that the majority of Triple Crowners first
(or finally) tread on their way toward the royal trifecta.
Even more baffling is the apparent lack of follow-through
from the top. The term is now in the hiking community's
vernacular, but where I beg is the coronation ceremony for
newly appointed royalty? ALDHA west, east, north or south -
somebody should at least organize a group trip to Burger
King each year for an AYCE whopper meal and an administering
of the cardboard crown. It just makes good horse sense to
me.
