[pct-l] Manning PCT

Christopher Willett>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Not having a whole lot of free time I hope to take the PCT 1 year at a time
in 1 week increments, starting in '05 in Manning Canada. -I'd like to start
with the first 70 miles from Manning to Washingtons Rainy Pass. I have read
that this is one of the most challenging areas of the trail? > I hope to do
this in 4/5 days either late July or the first week of September. Since
this area is heavily populated with Grizzely, that is my only concern.

Second Wind>>>>>>>>>>>> Chris... If you leave Manning Park early this
section is snow covered like a May climb through the high Sierras... 4/5
days is enough to get to Rainey Pass... we took 5 1/2 to get to
Stehekin-"right off the couch" (I'm old out of shape). The walk from
Rainey pass DOWN to Stehekin is a sweet cruse (southbound). I did the top
1200 miles of the PCT southbound 2 years ago (I'm section hiking it-have
Mojave-Palm Spring left to do this May to finish) ... the top 200 miles are
still my favorite part of the PCT but that may be because it was early and
completely snow covered and my first few weeks out. We only saw two brown
bears in this section-one at a distance and one dead on the trail.
