[pct-l] on topic and still confused



I believe this is the same warning that I use when mountain biking or skiing; only I use a more complete sentence:  "I'm on your (right/left)" to let the other party know what side I will be approaching.  Even though this seems like a clear statement, people are still invariably confused with their own right/left when someone approaches from the rear (including yours truly).

I think the rider/skiier behind you doesn't want you to jump anywhere at all.  This is scary that someone would move quickly.  The better, although less instinctive, behavior is to stand in place and turn to see where the rider is approaching from. It's much easier for them to pass you safely when you're stationary.
