Yes, if you start at Whitney Portal you need to win their lottery. If you
can't get that, try starting 3 days south at Horseshoe Meadow, going in
Cottonwood or Trail Pass.

Thanks for all the info, but I should've been more
specific.  I'm hoping to do the JMT nobo, starting at
Whitney Portal.  So does that mean I've only got to
score myself the Whitney Zone permit through the
lottery system, and it doesn't matter that I'll go
into Sierra NF and Yosemite and others as long as I
specify that on my app.?
